Imagine the better part of a thousand teachers and 900 more nonteaching staff leaving hot, humid, storm-damaged homes without electricity, or leaving motels miles from their school district workplace, and arriving at 5:30 a.m. or staying until 9 or 10 at night due to double-session school scheduling.

Re-create similar images for many of 17,000 students from 3 to 19 years of age, and the cinema in your mind will put you directly in the world of Monday, Aug. 30, 2004.
