Manatees are dying in record numbers and for reasons not always understood, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports.

As of Oct. 25, the FWC reported 766 manatee mortalities throughout the state, equaling the number of dead manatees reported in 2010, a record year for mortalities primarily due to winter cold stress. In 2012, the FWC reported 392 manatee mortalities for the entire year.
