Governor lauds area veterans

Florida Gov. Rick Scott handed out about 150 State Service Medals Thursday at the Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans Nursing Home, honoring the veterans for their service to the country.

PORT CHARLOTTE — Gilbert Broughton served his country through two wars. Thursday, the 86-year-old veteran received yet another medal, during a ceremony at the Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans Nursing Home.

Broughton was one of about 150 people honored with a State Service Medal at the event, recognized for their service to their country. Numerous dignitaries attended the ceremony at the home, including Florida Gov. Rick Scott, who handed out the medals.
