The total number of serious crimes in Charlotte, DeSoto and Sarasota counties dropped from 2012 to 2013, and all three counties saw the lowest number of index crimes per 100,000 residents in more than two decades, according to the latest Uniform Crime Report released Wednesday.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement announced its annual report also shows crime in the state is at a 43-year low, and, since 2009, the number of reported index crimes has fallen 15 percent, from 824,559 to 698,607.
