Local governments working on floodplain mitigation plans

SARASOTA COUNTY — As local governments wait for the Federal Emergency Management Agency to release revised floodplain maps in December, they continue updating a 30-year-old system in hopes of converting existing information to a digital format and maybe easing the burden on flood insurance rate payers along the way.

According to Desiree Companion, a community systems rating coordinator for the county, the federal government threw $144 million at Florida after Sept. 11, 2001, in hopes of digitizing a paper map system that detailed statewide floodplains.
