Esther “Lyle” Spangler Hagen, 83, a Nazarene Christian, passed away Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at Englewood Community Hospital in Englewood, Fla., from a heart attack.

She was born Nov. 16, 1930, in Sioux City, Iowa.

They lived on a farm. Her father died when she was 5, and her mother lived to the age of 98; Lyle looked after her mother in her last year of life. She graduated from Climbing Hill High School, class of ’48, went to Bethany-Pennel College, and graduated from Morningside College in 1963. She taught music in the Sioux City school system for 25 years.

Lyle didn’t like the farm, chickens or the cold weather, so she moved to San Antonio, Texas, and taught music in Nazarene Church school, gave piano lessons, was a professional driver of “Beamers,” and was a real estate agent. Lyle moved to Rotonda West, Fla., and shared a home with Bob Wachter until his death in 2010. She since has depended upon Meals on Wheels, and close friends. Lyle was an avid quilter, cross-stitcher, picture puzzler, golfer, and listened to Christian radio all day long. She was loved by many.

Lyle is survived by her sister, Charlene Spangler Beals; nieces, Karen Gaines and Kim Meyers; and nephew, Kyle Beals.

All are welcome to a life celebration service at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, at the Englewood United Methodist Church chapel. Gifts in her honor can be made to Meals on Wheels.

Arrangements are by Lemon Bay Funeral Home.
