Melvin Verner Peterson

Melvin Verner “Mel” Peterson, 95, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013.

He was born Feb. 15, 1918, in Denora, Pa.

Mel served in World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps, and retired as a Lt. Col. from the Air Force Reserve. He graduated from State Teachers College of California, Pa., and worked for Airborne Instruments Laboratory until retirement in 1978. Mel and Marjorie enjoyed retirement in Englewood, Fla., for 35 years.

He was an active member at St. David’s Episcopal Church, where he served as an usher and a vestry member. Mel recently moved to Knoxville, Tenn., and joined Church of the Ascension. He was an avid gardener, and served as president of the Englewood Men’s Garden Club. Mel tutored at what is now L.A. Ainger Middle School, and was active in the Kiwanis.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Marjorie; son, Craig (Carole); daughter, Lynn (Bruce) Charles; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and brother, Walter (Doris).

A memorial service and interment of ashes will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at St. David’s in Englewood, followed by a reception in the church hall.
