James Joseph “Jim” Mooney, 85, of Englewood, Fla., passed on to assume his place at the table of our Lord, Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at his Charlotte County, Fla., residence, in the arms and beloved company of his loving family.

He was born May 13, 1928, in Paterson, N.J., the beloved son of John and Jayne (nee DeLong) Mooney.

Jim served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and had been a resident for 27 years, coming from Paterson, where he retired as a marine mechanic.

A true gentleman, always young at heart, he was an American sailor and patriot, honorable son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. Jim will forever be remembered by all who knew him for his commitment to chivalry, honesty, living a virtuous life and, most importantly, a stubborn commitment to selflessness and maximizing the quality of life for those around him. A member of the “Greatest Generation” and a World War II veteran, Jim worked as a Realtor for Key Realty, and was an avid boater and golfer in his Englewood home. He was a communicant and Eucharistic minister at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Although he is peacefully watching over us from the stars above, his energy, goodwill and passion for morality will radiate among the rest of us for the remainder of our days.

Jim is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 27 years, Barbara; children, Debra, William, Jimmy, Alice and Cathy; siblings, Kenneth (Judith), Marilyn (Michael) and Joyce; grandchildren, Glenn, Kristen, Chris, William III, Courtney, Jarryd, Brieanna, Chace, Khloe, Lucas, Aria, Sean and Jenna; multiple nieces and nephews; and extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Paul, John, Robert and Roy; and sister, Jane.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., with a prayer service to be said at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 14, 2014, at Englewood Community Funeral Home, 3070 S. McCall Road, Englewood. The Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014, at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 5265 Placida Road, Grove City, Fla., with Father Adrian Wilde officiating. Interment will be at the St. Francis Memorial Garden.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Francis of Assisi Outreach Ministry, in memory of Jim. You may share a memory with the family at
