Ruth Seward Miller Matsinger, 94, died Saturday, March 15, 2014.
She was born March 29, 1919, Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of Wyatt S. and M. Lorna Miller.
Ruth lived first in Rose Valley, Pa., and moved to Hyattsville, Md., where she worked in the Adjutant Generals office during World War II. Later she worked as a bookkeeper/secretary for Platt-LePage Aircraft, then for Keystone Plastics where she met and married Elmer C. Matsinger. They lived in Chester County, Pa., where Ruth was bookkeeper/secretary for Health and Welfare Council and later became assistant director of Chester County Cares, an information and referral agency.
In Florida the couple owned and operated Matsinger’s Records Hobbies and Favors. Ruth was a reporter for the Englewood News and Sarasota Tribune. She worked as an accountant for Rotonda West, Fla., then became partner and part owner of Avenue Apparel. After retiring from that store, she became partner in Gingerbread House, children’s apparel. At one time Ruth also sold real estate with South County Realty. After widowhood and remarriage she turned to writing for magazines and self-published two books.
She leaves her daughters, Lorna Hunter and Ruth (Lloyd) Parsons all of Englewood, Fla.; son, William (Donna) Matsinger of Destin, Fla.; step-son, Robin (Martha) Chapman of Carlsbad, N.M.; niece, Gretchen Hill; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer C. Matsinger Sr.; and a son, Elmer W. Matsinger Jr.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2014, with funeral services to follow at Lemon Bay Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Gulf Pines Memorial Park.
