SWFL offers teams refuge

PORT CHARLOTTE — For several college baseball teams, the Snowbird Baseball Classic isn’t just a tournament, it’s also spring vacation.

Almost all of this year’s teams hail from the northern part of the country, using the tournament as a way to play some games while their fields are covered in snow. Several teams, including St. Bonaventure, Nebraska-Omaha and Western Michigan, spent more than a week in Port Charlotte while classes were on spring break. With so much extra time, players took advantage of the warm Southwest Florida weather.
