Coping with hot weather as we age

Studies have shown at thirst sensation, we’re already at two percent dehydration. Even at this small number, your ability to regulate heat begins to decline and deter the body’s natural cooling processes even more.

Hot weather can be a big concern for older people. Physiological changes, medication, loss of ability to sweat, and thirst sensation may play a role in heat related injury.

Each year in the United States, about 200 people die of health problems caused by high heat and humidity. Most of the victims are age 50 or older.
