Highlands Little Theatre will present “All Shook Up” on the Blackman Stage beginning March 23. This is not an Elvis show. You will not see any Elvis impersonators on stage. This is show where the songs of Elvis Presley form the backdrop for a great musical/comedy performance.
The show was inspired by the Shakespearian comedy, Twelfth Night. “One of the main themes in the show is how love changes the lives of the characters,” said Laura Wade, who plays Silvia, the no-nonsense owner of Silvia’s Honkey-Tonk.
“There are over 20 Elvis songs in the show,” said Amanda Mercer, director of the show. “Songs like ‘Jailhouse Rock,’ ‘Heartbreak Hotel,’ ‘Blue Suede Shoes,’ ‘Don’t Be Cruel’ and ‘an’t Help Falling in Love.’ I chose this show as it honors my mother. She hated Elvis impersonators but loved his music.”
The story is about Chad (Andrew Macbeth) who needs a mechanic for his motorcycle. He loves adventure and the ladies. Natalie (Michele Urda) is the local mechanic who dreams of love and adventure. She falls for Chad and does everything she can to attract his attention.
“Natalie is naive and doesn’t know how to flirt with Chad,” said Urda. “She even cross-dresses as a guy to get his attention and to be his friend. I’ve always loved musicals. I moved here a year ago and have directed shows before. I wanted to get back on stage too. This is my first lead,”
“Chad is full of song, soul and love for the ladies,” said Macbeth. “I’ve always been involved in musicals in the community. My wife (Margaret, who is in the ensemble) got me involved in this production.” This is also his first lead role.
There are a number of sub-plots in this show set in the 1950s that tie together at the end. Chad wants to create some excitement in a town whose morals prohibit what he has in mind. Other couples fall in love and the people of the town are changed. Who pairs up with who? You’ll just have to see this funny performance filled with the greatest music of Elvis Presley.
The cast includes Michele Urda (Natalie), Andrew Macbeth (Chad), Benton Hughes (Dennis), Carly Juve (Sandra),Isaac Hernandez (Dean), Emily Angell (Mayor Matilda), Elise Chaisson (Lorraine), Aslan Smith (Earl), Laura Wade (Silvia), Roger Smith (Jim), Abi Smith (Henrietta), Paolo Pineda (Henry), Dylan Ross (Guy 1), Kody Short (Guy 2).
Calvin Jones is one of the ensemble members. “I wanted to be in the play with my friends. I also wanted to try out some of the old -ime music.”
“It was fun to try out with my mom and sister,” said Harley Wade. “We were together before in the production of Annie.” Wade’s mom, Laura Wade plays Silvia and her sister, Elise Chaisson, plays Lorraine.
In addition to the main cast is an impressive ensemble cast and even a live band!
“All Shook Up” runs from March 23 through April 8. Evening shows are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday matinées are at 2:30 p.m.
