Melvin S. Westberg, 96, of Lake Placid, Fla., passed away Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at Good Shepherd Hospice in Sebring.
Born March 28, 1917, in Chicago, Ill., to Ebba and Sidney David Westberg, he moved with his family to Ft. Lauderdale at the age of 2. During the depression he and his family returned to Chicago for work. As a young man Mr. Westberg moved to Miami and started Mel’s Auto Service. In 1942, Mr. Westberg enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theater aboard a troop carrier. He then became a heavy equipment mechanic in Miami. Mr. Westberg enjoyed fishing, boating, repairing everything and spending time with his family and friends. He was of the Christian faith.
Mr. Westberg was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia. He is survived by sons James and Dennis Westberg; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Winters; and brother, Gerald S. Westberg.
Funeral services to celebrate Mr. Westberg’s life were Saturday, Nov. 9 at Scott Funeral Home with the Rev. Timothy Haas officiating. Graveside Military Honors by the VFW Post 4300 Honor Guard followed at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lake Placid.
