Milton Arden Callaway Sr., 98, of Lake Placid, Fla., passed away at Good Shepherd Somers hospice house on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013.
Born Aug. 30, 1915, in Bullard, Texas, Mr. Calloway was a “preacher’s kid.” In 1970, he came to Lake Placid after retiring from the Holsum Bakery in Miami. Mr. Callaway and his wife, Nellie, founded Faith Baptist Church of Lake Placid along with two deacons and their wives. That early church was a branch of First Baptist Church of Lake Placid.
Mr. Callaway built the family home on weekends, completing construction in seven years. He often volunteered for building projects at other churches, as well as at his wife’s day care center. His strong love of God, family and friends was his greatest treasure.
Survivors include two sons, Milton Arden Callaway Jr. (Glenda) of Ocala and David Leroy Callaway (Pat) of Jacksonville; three daughters, Carol Medina (Richard) of Perrine, Penny Thoburn of Lake Placid, and Cynthia Memoli (Vincent) of Ocala; 15 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Nellie, his wife of 75 years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Good Shepherd Somers Hospice House, 1110 Hammock Rd., Sebring, FL 33870.
Funeral services for Mr. Callaway will be Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013 at noon at Faith Baptist Church of Lake Placid, 660 Holmes Ave. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time. The Rev. William Cole will officiate. Entombment is private.
