Mary Gwin Peoples Marlow

Mary Gwin Peoples Marlow, of Lake Placid, Fla., died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014. She was 92.

Born Dec. 18, 1921, in Alabama to Dovie Sandlin and Mault Gwin of Yolande, she graduated from the University of Alabama with a nursing degree and enlisted in the U.S. Army Nursing Corp. After being discharged, she settled in Birmingham, Ala., and later in Coral Gables where she continued her nursing profession. In 1955, she came to Lake Placid and worked as a nurse and assisted her husband, Roy Peoples, at Lake Placid Insurance Company. Following the death of her first husband, she married Richard Marlow.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lake Placid, the Junior Woman’s Club, and was a past commander of the American Legion. Mary loved to cook, enjoyed golfing and playing bridge. She was an avid Alabama football fan.

Mrs. Marlow is survived by her children, Roy J. Peoples Jr. and Mary Alice Shackelford; stepson Darel Smith; grandchildren Lindsey and Casey; four great-grandchildren; and nephews and nieces. Mary was preceded in death by her husbands, Roy Peoples and Richard Marlow.

A memorial service was Saturday at the Lake Placid American Legion post with military honors presented by the American Legion Color Guard. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to the Sebring VA office to help the needy veterans program.

Memorial arrangements were under the devotion of Michael A. Brochetti Funeral Home, Lake Placid.
