Robert L. Durham III, 59, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, when he was ejected from his 1998 Ford Explorer in a 3:40 p.m. single-vehicle crash at Lake Avenue near Main Street in Avon Park.
The Florida Highway Patrol reports that Durham, of Avon Park, was driving south on North Lake Avenue when he lost control of his SUV, driving over a curb and onto the west shoulder of the road. The right front of the SUV hit a light pole on the west shoulder of the road, then traveled back into the road and began to spin and overturn.
Durham was thrown from the vehicle and ended up just south of his SUV, which was on the northbound side of the road in front of the First Baptist Church.
Friends reported Durham was driving around, looking for a family pet that escaped the house earlier.
