A motorcyclist involved in a crash on U.S. 27 at Lake Josephine Drive north of Lake Placid died from his injuries shortly after being transported to Highlands Regional Medical Center in Sebring.

Andy Vega of Sebring was driving his Suzuki GSXR south on U.S. 27 when a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche drove from Lake Josephine Drive onto the four-lane highway, directly in the path of the cycle. The motorcycle slammed into the left rear of the Chevrolet. The force of the collision spun the Avalanche which came to rest in the median.

According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, the Chevrolet was driven by Jose Valdovinos, 48, of Lake Placid. Valdovinos and his passenger, 18-year-old Gabriela Valdovinos, escaped injury.

Trooper Jay Spencer noted in his report that charges are pending against Valdovinos.
