A Lake Placid man was charged with attempted second-degree murder Wednesday, Dec. 18 after allegedly shooting another man in retaliation for being punched the night before.
According to arrest reports, deputies were called to the emergency room at Florida Hospital Lake Placid after the victim, 28-year-old Derry Starkey, was driven there by another man who found the victim limping along E.A. Smith Ave., around 12:50 p.m. Dec. 17.
Starkey told deputies that Keldrice Deshon Legree, 31, of 1108 Aaron Drive in Lake Placid, had shot him in the left buttocks. The victim said that he had been involved in a fight the night of Monday, Dec. 16 at the intersection of Vision Street and Crestmore Drive. He swung at the person he was fighting but accidentally hit Legree, who found him on Tuesday, Dec. 17 and shot him in retaliation.
The victim said he knows Legree and identified a booking photo of the man.
Legree was arrested Wednesday, Dec. 18. He has been convicted of felony drug charges in the past, and was also charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
