“Senseless,” “ignorant,” “stupid,” “pointless,” were just a few of the terms used to describe recent vandalism to the DeVane Park gazebo in uptown Lake Placid.

Why would anyone do such damage to the gazebo and ruin it for the citizens of Lake Placid?, asked Town Administrator Phil Williams.

Damage occurred during the months of November and December. Photographs taken in early December show considerable damage to the gazebo including graffiti and physical damage to railings, panels and the ceiling. Photographs taken recently show that the vandalism has continued.

The cost of repairs will be considerable, Williams said.

Long range security cameras have recorded events related to the vandalism, but the suspects could not be clearly identified. Williams said the town will be installing additional security cameras to help identify anyone doing damage in the gazebo and the park.

Williams also said a $200 reward is offered for information leading to the identity and arrest of the vandals. Anyone with information may call Town Hall at 863-699-3747 or the nonemergency police department number at 863-699-3757.
