The Lake Placid Lady Dragons forged a 1-1 tie with the McKeel Academy Wildcats in an important district game Tuesday evening, Dec. 10, at Roger Scarborough Memorial Field. The deadlock actually was a moral victory for the Lady Dragons who suffered a 4-0 loss to the Wildcats earlier in the season.
Mary Grace Bates connected with the ball at midfield at the 11:15 mark and outraced everyone to the goal in breakaway fashion, scoring the Lady Green’s only tally of the game.
The 1-0 Lake Placid lead held up throughout the first half, thanks to some strong defense and extraordinary goalkeeping by Tamija Douglas who slapped away at least eight shots on goal by McKeel in the first half. Just before the first half ended she literally threw herself at a ball which had “score” written all over it to preserve Lake Placid’s initial period advantage.
McKeel managed to tie the game in the second half on a corner kick which the visitors bandied about twice in front of the goal before a Wildcat player managed to kick it in.
“We’ll take it!” was the exclamation heard from Lake Placid Coach John Merlo after the game. He praised the defensive play of Ana and Rosa Ramirez, Jazmin Molina, Jenna Blount and Eden Taylor. “We did an excellent job on defense,” the coach said.
