Raining down numerous three-point baskets, the Avon Park Red Devil junior varsity basketball team rallied to come from behind to defeat the Lake Placid Green Dragon J.V.’s, 62-52, in a game played in Avon Park Friday evening, Dec. 13.
Lake Placid finished the game with only seven players in uniform, an eighth player leaving the game in the first half due to an injury. Avon Park was able to field almost double that number, and the way the game played out, it was apparent that fatigue played a part in the Lake Placid loss.
With Markie McCray, Victor Jackson and Zach Waters each scoring four points and Marquez Pride tossing in a field goal as well, the Green Dragons raced to a 14-10 lead in the first quarter. McCray, Waters, Pride and Angel Ojeda provided the impetus to give Lake Placid a 28-25 advantage at the half.
The Green Dragons were still very much in the game at the end of three as the count was deadlocked, 41-all, at that point. Wil Ebersole and Waters each contributed five points. Waters sank an acrobatic field goal from the right corner to make the score 31-27 in favor of the Dragons at the 5:43 mark.
The game began to slip away in the final stanza as the home team sank a number of three-point baskets, amassing 21 points in the last quarter to take the win.
Lake Placid was led in scoring by Zach Waters with 17 points. Markie McCray was next with 15. Victor Jackson added eight, Wil Ebersole five, Angel Ojeda three, Marquez Pride four and Frentress Flemming two.
Avon Park rode the crest of 20 points from Joseph Nobles.
