Dragons third in Heartland Conference tennis tourney

The Lake Placid Green Dragon boys’ tennis team finished third in the Heartland Conference Tennis Tournament played Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22, in Avon Park. The Okeechobee Brahmans took first place in the overall standings with 19 points. Sebring’s Blue Streaks were second at 15, with the Green Dragons third at 6. Avon Park and Hardee deadlocked for fourth with 1 point each.

In number one singles Lake Placid’s Royce Abela won over an Avon Park opponent and lost to one from Sebring. Clayton Main, playing in the number two slot, lost to Sebring as did Luis Mejias in the number three position. Landon Davis, fourth on the Green Dragons’ ladder, had a first-round bye, then won over Hardee in the semifinal round and lost to Okeechobee in the finals. David McBryer beat Hardee and lost to Okeechobee in the number five singles competition.

In doubles, Abela and Davis won over Avon Park and bowed to Okeechobee while Clayton Main and Mejias defeated an Avon Park tandem and lost to Sebring.

Dragon boys win over Clewiston, 6-1

The Lake Placid Green Dragon boys’ tennis team notched a 6-1 victory over the Clewiston Tigers in a match played there Thursday, Feb. 20.

Clewiston’s Peng Zhu defeated Lake Placid’s number one singles player, Royce Abela 5-7, 2-6 in the Dragons’ only loss of the match. Clayton Main, at number two, decisioned Zachary Dykes 6-1, 6-0. Luis Mejias stroked to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Basil Tady in number three singles. Landon Davis won over Javier Hurtado 6-0, 6-2 in number four while David McBryer stopped Randy Paniagua 6-0, 6-2 at number five on the singles ladder.

In number one doubles Abela and Davis defeated Zhu and Dykes 8-1 in a pro-set. Clayton Main and Mejias topped Tady and Hurtado 8-0.
