That elusive first win of the baseball season finally came to the Lake Placid Green Dragon varsity in a 7-4 victory over the DeSoto Bulldogs in a game played Friday, Feb. 28, in Arcadia.
Things looked bleak for the Green Dragon nine early in the game as their hosts rocked ace righthander Tyler Carr for four runs in the bottom of the first. Carr gave up three singles and there were a couple of Lake Placid errors as well. From then on, however, Carr and his teammates clamped down on the Bulldogs. Carr surrendered only one hit the rest of the way, and DeSoto had very few base runners the rest of the game.
Down 4-0 in the fifth inning, Lake Placid struck for three runs. Paul Cantwell reached on an infield error. Isaiah Velasquez, Gunner Smoak, Tyler Carr and Laine Daum each hit singles. Cantwell, Velasquez and Smoak scored. The Dragons added two more in the sixth inning to take the lead. Justin Mason walked and stole second. Cantwell rapped out his second base hit of the game and a long fly ball to right field from the bat of Smoak turned into a two-run error as Mason and Cantwell raced home.
Daum doubled, Carr and Alex Miller singled to produce two more runs for Lake Placid in the final inning.
