The Lake Placid Green Dragon track team, while it did not finish first, gave an excellent account of itself at the Class 2A, District 9 meet held Thursday, April 10, at Frostproof.
“Fifteen of our athletes will be going on to regional competition next Wednesday in Tampa and I think that’s awesome. We had a great day!” said Coach Scott Morgan.
Athletes who finished in fourth place or above proceed to regionals.
First place in the girls’ competition went to the host team, Frostproof, which scored 184 points. Lakeland’s McKeel Academy was second at 133. Lake Wales finished third with 129. The Lady Dragons were fourth with 90 points. Then came Avon Park at 74, Tenoroc with 14 and Mulberry brought up the rear with 2.
Lake Placid’s Quiahja Williams had a truly spectacular day, winning the high jump at 4 feet, 10 inches, the long jump at 15 feet, 1 inch, and roaring to first place in the 100-meter dash at 13.09 seconds. With teammates Briana Bodon, Rosa Ramirez and Allison Kinchen, Williams led the way to a runner-up finish in the 4 x 100 meter relay race at 55.43.
Sonia Becerra, Kathryn LeBlanc, Briana Bodon and Belkis Rivero were fourth in the 4 x 400 relay at 4:48.07. LeBlanc took third in the pole vault with a leap of 7 feet while Becerra took fourth at 6 feet, 6 inches. Jacqueline Barajas, Gabriella Perez, Elizabeth Gloria and Rosa Ramirez were fourth in the 4 x 800 relay at 12:36.59. Perez ran the distance events for the Lady Dragons, taking fourth in the 1,600 meter run and third in the 3,200 meters with times of 6:24.59 and 14:57.52 respectively.
The Green Dragon boys were sixth, garnering 28.50 points, finishing behind Lake Wales, Frostproof, McKeel, Mulberry and Tenoroc. Dalton Hillier gave the Dragons a fourth place in the pole vault, soaring 7 feet, 6 inches. Julian Obregon, Scott Sigrist, Gabriel Mercer and Dalton Shelton were fourth in the 4 x 800 relay race at 9:34.89. Shelton took fourth in the 1,600 meters at 4;45.25 and third in the 3,200 meters timed at 10:22.06.
