Lake Placid’s Dixie Youth ages 13-15 softball team defeated Wahneta, 12-9, and gained the championship of Dixie Youth’s District 5 Wednesday evening, June 25. The game was played in Frostproof.

The Lake Placid girls opened the proceedings with a run in the first inning as Alyssa Ortiz singled to right center and came racing home on a double to left by Leah Moore. Two more came home for Lake Placid in the second. Kiara Slade walked and stole around the bases. Jillian Rykaceski doubled to left, moved to third on a fielder’s choice grounder and came scored on a passed ball.

Four big ones came home for the champions in the third inning. Ortiz reached on an infield error and stole the next three sacks. Leah Moore whacked a line-drive single to left field and tallied on a double to left field from the bat of Dontaysia Gobourne. Kelcie Rodriguez gets credit for an almost-inside-the-park home run which rounded out the scoring for the inning. She lofted a huge fly to deep right field which was muffed by the Wahneta outfielder and rolled all the way to the fence. By the time the ball was retrieved, young Rodriguez had rounded third and headed home. Rodriguez and Ortiz would score again in the fifth to put two more notchs on the scoreboard for the winners.

Lake Placid’s final three runs were scored in the sixth. Jillian Rykaceski hit a line drive base hit to left field and Haley Carl singled to right. That set the stage for Legacy Hart to smack a double to deep center field to bring in both runners. Ashley Perdian singled to plate Hart.

Wahneta scored two in the second inning, four in the fourth with a little help from the Lake Placid defense, one more in the fifth and two in the sixth.

The Lake Placid girls now move on to state tournament competition in Okeechobee. The tourney will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 11-13.
