Kenny Clower, first vice post commander of the Lake Wales American Legion, addressed the students, teachers and parents attending the Veterans Day precelebration Friday at the Spook Hill Elementary School.

“All veterans are part of my family,” Clower said. “They are someone I can go to and depend on. Even those I have never met. I say a prayer each day for those in the service and those who gave their lives for our country.”

Principal Eric Edwards urged parents to see that their children are taught to recognize the very important events of our country, asking the audience to take a moment of silence to reflect all those veterans who gave their lives for our country.

All the children sang a patriotic song.

Debra Gage, third-grade teacher, was gifted with a bouquet of flowers and recognized as the teacher of the year for the Spook Hill school.

Lake Wales Scholars were recognized for their academic prowess and included Deshana Medina, Samuel Gerhart, Jakob Campbell, Angelina Monter, Abigail Pettus, Theressa Fitterling, Zackary Walters, Beckenvauer Antunez, Aaron Rice, Jaiden Clerk, Kaden Burrus and Courtney Lee.

Classroom attendance honors and Casper Kids honors were awarded.
