A Lake Wales man with an active felony warrant is now wanted for additional charges, according to a press release issued by Lake Wales Police Department Deputy Chief Troy Schulze.

According to reports, on at about 9:25 p.m. Jan. 27, officers from the LWPD responded to D Street and Dr. JA Wiltshire Blvd. in reference to a disturbance.

During the investigation, police say it was determined a verbal argument resulted in Jevonski Cherry, a 21-year-old Lake Wales resident, being hit in the face with a handgun.

Reports say police were told by Cherry and witnesses he had been in an argument with another man but nothing physical happened between them. The other man, who is unidentified at this time, was overheard making a phone call to someone and was saying on the phone he had been jumped, reports say.

Police note that shortly after the phone call, another man showed up and approached Cherry.

According to statements obtained by police, the man, whom they have identified as Nygel A. Harris, a 27-year-old Lake Wales resident, allegedly immediately struck Cherry on the face twice with a small handgun causing minor injuries. Police were told Harris and the unidentified black male then got in a white van and began to drive away.

As they were driving away, police say Harris was allegedly seen firing multiple rounds from the handgun into the air. Nobody was hit by bullets from the firearm, according to reports.

At this point Harris has not been located, but police have active charges on Harris for aggravated battery and discharge of a firearm in public.

Police say Harris also currently has an active Polk County warrant for possession of cocaine, and Schulze notes Harris has an extensive criminal history ranging from drug charges to burglaries.

Anyone who has information on where Harris can be located is encouraged to contact Detective Ivelisse Rodriguez at 863-678-4223 ext. 271 or Heartland Crime Stoppers at (800) 226-8477, to remain anonymous.
