Ruby “Jean” Dickson, 86, of Peoria, Ariz., passed away peacefully in her home on June 28, 2014.
She was born to O.V. and Ivy Schwab in Shafton, Penn. on April 13, 1928.
After high school, she attended the Fashion Institute of Merchandising in New York City. In 1947, the family moved to Frostproof, Fla., where family members still reside, where she worked at the Ford Agency and where she contracted tuberculosis, losing most of one lung to the disease. After a lengthy rehabilitation, she worked as registrar at Florida Southern College in Lakeland.
She married Air Force cadet Kenneth Dickson in 1954, having two sons, Eric, born in France, and Ryan in Biloxi, Miss., and like many army wives, cared for them while her husband flew missions in Vietnam. After Major Dickson’s retirement, the couple owned and operated an inflatable boat store in Phoenix, Ariz., and later worked in real estate, frequently vacationing in Lake Powell, and other scenic areas. Jean lived for 14 years with her son Ryan and wife Laura, who survived her.
Other survivors include son Eric, his wife, Marion, and their children, Martin and Erin, Houston, Texas; Florida relatives include sister, Joan S. Hanley, Winter Haven; Dene S. Morris and husband, Ben, Smyrna, Ga.; brother, Jimmy Schwab, Frostproof, and his children: Aron Schwab, Frostproof, Sandy Tregear, Lake Wales, and James Schwab, Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.; cousin, Robert McCullough, Frostproof.
