Both the Lake Wales Highlanders and Frostproof Bulldogs will be well represented at the Florida high school track and field championships set next weekend in Jacksonville.
Lake Wales will send both the boy’s and girl’s 4x400 meter relay teams after they each won titles at the Class 2A, Region 3 meet at Berkeley Prep last week.
The Highlander boy’s team includes Stanley Smith, Earnest Hamilton, Jimmy Liason and LaCorey Rico Wertz, who turned in a time of 3:24.92 in the finals to win by more than four seconds over second place Tampa Catholic.
The Highlander girl’s team includes Cynethia Wertz, Clauna Duclose, Haley Haverly and Tatiana Wimbley, who won with a finals clocking of 4:07.25, just ahead of the quartet from Lemon Bay which was timed in 4:08.32.
Hamilton also earned a state spot with his second in the 800 meter run. He finished in 1:59.35, just off the winning time of McKeel’s Leif Henrikson who had a 1:59.04. Hamilton had a seed time of 1:58.10, which was best in the field.
Frostproof is sending three representatives, including pole vaulter Robby Costine who was runner up at 12’-6” in the finals. He had a jump of 15-feet in the district meet a week earlier. The winner was Nick Catchur of Tampa Jesuit at 14 feet.
Jarviel Hart captured second in the long jump with his effort in the finals of 21’-9.25.” The winning leap, from Ahmad Middleton of Dunedin, was 22 feet event.
On the girls side, Rakaya Neeley will represent the Ridge in the 400 meter dash. She turned in a second place effort in the finals of 58.15, just off the winning time of Gibbs High Schooler Jerosan Fietcher which was 57.59 seconds.
The state class 2A meet will be May 2 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
