Darrell’s Restaurant opened barely three months ago, and the place it’s already buzzing with activity. Located in Venice’s quaint Brickyard shopping area on U.S. 41, Darrell’s features catfish, shrimp and grits, crab cake with fried green tomatoes, fried chicken and Southern fried (or grilled) pork chops as entrees, served with cornbread and two sides. As one would expect, the sides include sweet potatoes (fried or baked), cucumber salad, mashed potatoes and gravy, black-eyed peas, collard greens and nana’s baked beans. Pecan pie and fruit cobbler are featured desserts.
Customers are welcomed personally at the door by Darrell Hornberger, the owner himself, who feels very much at home in restaurants. “I literally grew up in restaurants,” he explained. “My mom was my inspiration. She worked as a server in an upscale restaurant in Albany, N.Y., and she supported our family on her salary. I’d stop by every day after school to work on homework and observe waiters, chefs and servers in action. After graduation I followed my mother’s example. I’ve worked as a server in many popular restaurants, and I’ve learned how important it is to please customers.”
