“The Counselor” is a film loaded with good actors playing greedy animals. And maybe it’s monetary greed that led some of them to appear in this dark thriller. Because the only animals I appreciated were the two real cheetahs that were pets of one of the nasty humans.
This is a movie mostly about how the Counselor, an attorney played by Michael Fassbender, gets involved in the drug trade (did I mention greed earlier?). Yep, it’s a seedy world out there in El Paso on the Tex-Mex border and the bad seeds abound in Counselor’s world. These unlikable criminal types are played by Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz and Javier Bardem as well as brief scenes with Rosie Perez, Ruben Blades, Bruno Ganz and others. Penelope Cruz, playing the girlfriend of the Counselor, is perhaps the only sane person, although her part is not large and we never get to know her character. In fact, there are so many unsavory types popping in and out that we don’t get to understand any of the characters.
