Venice is the Shark Tooth Capital of the World because of sharks that have been dead so long that only their fossilized teeth remain.

Experts can tell the type of shark by the teeth. Some are nearly triangular and some seem to be more hook-like, I have found them as small as one-eighth of an inch high and as large as 3 inches. Sadly the latter was only half a tooth. They come in all different shades of green and brown. That supposedly relates to the color of the sand where the teeth became fossilized. I have never found a white tooth from a modern day shark at the beach, although that might be possible, I am far from an expert.
