History has told us that the bagel came to New York City with immigrating eastern Europeans in the early 1800s. Back then, vendors used to thread the fresh bread through its holes with a dowel and sell them on street corners.
In present day Southwest Florida, there are not many places where you can get authentic-tasting New York-style bagels — unless you go to Cafe Bagel in Venice. Owners Jennifer and David DiPiazza are originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., and had a cafe there as well. For the past eight years, they have owned their restaurant here, in addition to some other family businesses.
