DeSoto hosts annual Watermelon Festival

How much fun is the bungee jump at the DeSoto County Watermelon Festival? Just ask Charli Hardegee. The 2013 Watermelon Festival drew some 70 vendors and crowds of people to take part in contests, buy some handmade crafts and enjoy good food along the banks of the Peace River.

The first watermelons may have originated in the Kalahari Desert region of Africa, but they remain a staple of the American summertime table today.

There's nothing like a juicy, red watermelon to cool you off and put the taste of sunshine in your mouth. Luckily for Suncoast residents, DeSoto County is one of the largest producers of watermelon in the state of Florida.
