Punta Gorda has been known as the City of Hibiscus since the 1920s, when hibiscus plantings were placed all over town.

To appreciate and celebrate the lovely flowering plant, and the city's connection to it, the 10th annual Hibiscus Festival will be held this weekend in Gilchrist Park. This is an incredibly popular festival and runs for three days, from Friday, May 16, to Sunday, May 18.
