Burn calories at the city of North Port’s 8th annual Firecracker 5K Run in the morning Friday, just in time to celebrate our nation’s independence at the Fourth of July Freedom Festival starting at 6 p.m.

Runners will take off at 7:30 a.m. Friday from the Morgan Family Community Center, with T-shirts given to the first 300 entrants. The “flat and fast” 3.1-mile race draws “some families and people from out of town coming to the area for the Fourth of July, some coming dressed up,” said North Port Parks and Recreation Manager Sandy Pfundheller.
