The mayor of Venice, at a hastily convened meeting of the Venice City Council on Wednesday, declared a State of Emergency as of this past Friday at 12:01 a.m., officially closing down City Hall until Hurricane Irma passes.

The declaration is imperative if the city is to receive reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in case there are damages to public property, according to city officials.
