NORTH PORT — A 9-year-old boy was praised by North Port Police Chief Kevin Vespia for finding an AR-15 assault rifle in the woods near Jinright Road and Jack Street on Sunday and turning it over to authorities.
According to an NPPD incident report, the boy found the weapon about 10 feet off the roadway on the north side of Jinright Road around 7 p.m. Sunday. The boy immediately went home and told his stepfather of the find, and the pair returned to the site. The rifle contained 15 rounds of .223 ammunition, the report states, although one round of ammunition was accidentally discharged by the boy’s stepfather when he picked up the weapon.
