PUNTA GORDA — Marine Patrol officers arrested a Punta Gorda man last week on charges of conducting commercial fishing operations in Alligator Creek. According to the report, one of the deputies assigned to the Marine Patrol Unit was off duty Dec. 31 in his personal vessel when he saw Jeffrey Dean May, 36, of the 14100 block of Burnt Store Road in Punta Gorda, in a commercial fishing vessel using a commercial mullet cast net in the Alligator Creek area. Commercial fishing is not allowed in Alligator Creek. As a member of the Marine Patrol Unit, the deputy indicated he knew May by sight. Since the deputy was off duty, he did not approach May. He did attempt to call for another marine unit, but there were no marine officers in the area at the time.

May was located Jan. 9 and arrested for the incident the deputy witnessed. May was charged with violation of Florida Fish and Game fish rules and violation of probation. He was released on a total $16,500 bond.
