Mural artist Michael Vires stands in front of his creation near the corner of Olympia Avenue and Taylor Street in downtown Punta Gorda. Vires was commissioned by the Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society to paint a mural of George Brown, a successful black businessman who moved to Charlotte County in the late 1800s, on a utility wall near the Historic Charlotte County Courthouse.

PUNTA GORDA — As a youngster, artist Mike Vires loved to draw replicas of old black-and-white photos.

In some ways, it felt like capturing history on canvas.
