NORTH PORT — The mother of a 2-year-old boy was charged with child neglect Tuesday after authorities claim she burned the toddler’s genitals with a hot hair dryer that was plugged in and sitting next to a bathtub containing water, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

Devon J. Rowand, 24, of the 400 block of Granada Boulevard, in the Warm Mineral Springs community near North Port, was bathing the boy Jan. 25, according to a report, when the child was injured. She later told investigators she didn’t report the incident because she didn’t want the Department of Children and Families to become involved. She told the toddler’s father, who alternates custody with Rowand, that the boy suffered a “little accident” when she left him unattended to check on her 2-month-old baby.
