SARASOTA COUNTY — When Sarasota County commissioners unanimously approved their bicycle and pedestrian plan last October, Sarasota County Commissioner Christine Robinson said the public’s help was needed to identify problems with area bike lanes and trails.
That prompted Steve Christian, an avid cycling advocate who works with several biking organizations around Sarasota County, to take action. Christian, who frequently rides the county’s 230 miles of bike lanes and trails, has produced a 42-page report for Sarasota County outlining the problems with vegetation encroachment, lane markings fading and rough pavement with the on-road inventory of bicycle facilities for the area of Sarasota County south of Clark/Stickney Point Road. That includes 143 miles of bike lanes and 89 miles of paved shoulders.
