North Port Parks and Recreation is currently working on plans for portages that would allow canoes and kayaks to travel around water control structures like the one pictured. The creation of the portages would connect three canals in a six-mile route.

NORTH PORT — The city Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is working to design a blueway, or water trail, for canoes and kayaks that will connect four North Port parks.

“It’s about a six-mile route of linked waterways,” Sandy Pfundheller, North Port Parks and Recreation manager. “We’re hoping that this would be a good way to start promoting ecotourism for the city of North Port.”
