SARASOTA COUNTY — Saturday marks the opening of Scherer Thaxton Preserve, a 287-acre addition to Sarasota County’s already extensive parks system that’s named, in part, after former county commissioner Jon Thaxton.

The event will feature guest speakers, nature walks and a “vine-cutting” to celebrate the Nokomis park, which is accessible not only by the Honore Avenue extension, but also the Legacy Trail and Oscar Scherer State Park.
