PORT CHARLOTTE — About 20,000 residents and businesses lost power Thursday afternoon when a crane toppled over onto some power lines.
The incident happened in a construction zone for a county micro-tunneling project around 1:30 p.m., just off U.S. 41 southbound, between Conway and Harbor boulevards. It appeared the ground simply gave out under the crane, although authorities would have to conduct an investigation to confirm that, Charlotte County Fire/EMS spokeswoman Dee Hawkins-Garland said shortly after the incident.
