Enjoying a white Christmas in frigid Ohio

We spent Christmas with our daughter and her family. They live on 10 acres and a pond just outside Waldo — that’s Ohio, not Florida.

There were no geese around. I assume they were in Canada. It was just as well for the pond was frozen. When the pond gets a skim of ice on it, the family debates how thick it must be to walk on. The three grandsons are men now so they get to enter in. The range of thickness-guesses is anywhere from 4 inches to a foot. Being an old farm boy, I know that two or three nights at 2-below renders the ice walkable. No one will try it, and at 83 they won’t let me. But I fool them and when they’re off shopping or such I get out there and slide around — as I did at age 12. At that age, all I had was an old pair of clampons and much of the time I was skating on my ankles.
