The number one epiphany the Answer Man encountered while attending the two-day Charlotte County Government Academy was that there is so much more going on behind the scenes, so much nitty-gritty stuff that makes the wheels of government turn endlessly, seamlessly, beyond the purview of the public, about which many citizens, including the AM, don't, or didn't, have a clue.
Take veterans services provided by the county's Human Services department. Want veterans claims assistance, help in ordering DD form 214, finding service records or awards and decorations? No problem. Medical and dental records, service-connected disabilities, nonservice connected pensions? OK. Burial benefits, headstones and markers? Check. Education benefits, life insurance programs, VA home loans? Yep. At least 25 veterans' benefits, including disabled hunting and fishing licenses and motor vehicle license plates. Your government works for veterans.
