NORTH PORT — A suspect was killed in an officer-involved shooting late Tuesday night on Toledo Blade Boulevard, police say.

On Tuesday at 10:48 p.m., a North Port police officer was checking out a suspicious vehicle, a white minivan, on Toledo Blade, about a half-mile north of Interstate I-75. Approximately 1 minute later, the officer called out “shots fired,” and additional officers were dispatched and responded to the area. Police say the suspect brandished a weapon at the time of the encounter. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office was requested and responded to investigate the incident in accordance with North Port Police Department policy. The officer involved did not sustain any physical injuries; however, the occupant of the suspicious vehicle was pronounced dead at a local hospital. No names have been released. The investigation is ongoing.
