NORTH PORT — The man shot by a North Port Police Department officer Tuesday night on Toledo Blade Boulevard has been identified as James David Duttman, 58, of Pembroke Pines, Fla., according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. An investigation ongoing.

The shooting took place around 10:48 p.m. Tuesday, when North Port Police Officer Aaron Nick “checked out” a suspicious white minivan parked in an isolated area about a half-mile north of Interstate 75 on Toledo Blade, a report states. Nick called out “shots fired” a minute later. The report states that investigators believe Duttman brandished a weapon prior to the shooting. Duttman was transported to the North Port Emergency Room on Toledo Blade Boulevard, where he was pronounced dead. Nick did not sustain any injuries, the report states. Nick, a 19-year veteran of the department, was placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an investigation, which is standard procedure after an officer-involved shooting.
