SARASOTA COUNTY — Leaders from Sarasota County, North Port and Venice appear poised to follow the direction of national homelessness expert Dr. Robert Marbut, who says it’s time to “simply just start” in fighting a growing countywide issue.
Marbut, a San Antonio, Texas-based consultant brought in by the county and the city of Sarasota to study the area’s homelessness issue, presented his findings in a report he has been working on for the last three months during a joint meeting of the Sarasota County Commission, North Port City Commission and Venice City Council Monday at the Venice Community Center. Marbut preached a clear message to the governing bodies and to the crowd of nearly 300 people in attendance: If you want to help the homeless, you need to stop enabling the homeless, and engage them.
